Black Hills Trout Fishing |
||
|
Black Hills trout fishing is primarily in small alpine lakes and cool mountain streams, most of which are in the Black Hills National Forest or Custer State Park. Some of the best Black Hills trout fishing can be had in the lakes nearest to Custer. Stockade Lake is the closest (3 miles east) and offers some fine Black Hills trout fishing, there also is a chance of hooking into bass, crappie, and northern pike. Bismarck Lake (4 miles east) is primarily a trout fishery as are Legion Lake (7 miles east), Sylvan Lake (7 miles north), and Center Lake (15 miles east). The largest lakes in the Black Hills are Pactola Reservoir (30 miles north), Deerfield Lake (25 miles northwest), and Sheridan Lake (17 miles north). Some of the more productive streams in the area include French Creek, Spring Creek, Castle Creek, Rapid Creek, and Spearfish Creek. The majority of lakes in the Black Hills are stocked with rainbow trout, while most of the streams in the Black Hills are managed for wild brown and brook trout. Only those streams which are unable to naturally maintain acceptable populations of trout are stocked. The statewide daily limit is five trout. In the Black Hills only one trout 14 inches or longer may be included in the daily limit, regardless of species. This limit applies to all streams and lakes in the Black Hills Trout Management Area. There are also some special management areas which are catch and release only as well as areas where only artificial lures may be used. South Dakota Game Fish and Parks Department publishes a fishing handbook with the regulations and maps of the affected areas that is available for free from SD-GF&P .
